Rainy Day Fun for Kids - Games
Here are a few inexpensive games to play when the weather isn’t nice enough for your children to play outside. Some involve things that you probably already have around the house or are inexpensive items that can be purchased at the dollar store.
Spending time with your children is fun for all and is quality time that will be remembered by your children long after.
Word Games
I spy with my little eye something that is _____ (colour) – one person picks something that they can see in the room and the other player(s) has turns guessing what it is.
Who am I? Or Where am I? (Twenty questions, etc.) – One person thinks of a person place,
or an animal and the others ask questions and try to guess who they are.
Geography – start with the name of a location and the next location has to start with the last letter of the previous location. E.g. Edmonton is the first location and the next location starts with an N.
I am going on a trip and I will bring… (Works well with a group as well) One person starts the list and the next person repeats the list and adds an item. The next person then repeats the sentence and also the first and second person’s items and then adds another item to the list, and so on…
Chain mail (for a group) – The first person whispers a message into their neighbour’s ear and then the message gets repeated through the entire group. It’s surprising how different the original message can be from the last one spoken.
Card Games for Children – there are several variations for card games, so if the rules are different than you remember them, there is no cause for alarm.
Go Fish – Can be played with a regular deck of cards if you don’t have the children’s card game. The object of the game is to run out of cards first. Each player is dealt seven cards (with two players) or five cards for three or more.
The players then take turns asking each other for a card (so they can make pairs or more) and lay down those cards. If the person the player has asked does not have that card, the response is “Go Fish” and the turn goes to the next player. If the player does have the card
that was asked for, he/she must give the player asking all of the cards in their hand that were asked for. E.g. If the person asks “Do you have any eights?” and you have two of them in your hand, you must give both of the eights to the player that asked for them. The game is over when someone runs out of cards.
Memory – is a good game to build concentration levels in players. This game can be played with a normal deck of cards if you do not have the commercial version of it.
To start: All of the cards are turned face down on the table. Players turn over two cards at a time for their turn. If these cards match, they put the pair into their pile and take another turn. If the cards do not match, they are turned face down into the same spot and the
next player takes a turn.
The game is over when all of the cards have been removed from the playing area. The winner of the game has the most pairs.
Crazy Eights – can be played by two or more. There are many variations for the game but basically the rules are as follows:
The objective of the game is to get rid of all of your cards before any other play does.
To start the game, the dealer deals out seven cards to each player (for two playing the game) or five cards for more players and places the last card face up to start play.
Each player must then take a card from their hand and match either the number of the card or another card in the same suit. If no card can be played, the player must take another card. If the card drawn is one that can be played, the player may do so and the turn goes to
the next player.
Eights can be used to change the suit by a player. The card is placed on the playing pile and the player announces the suit of his/her choice.
Snap – This game can be played with a normal deck of cards. The object of the game is to end up with all of the cards. The deck is dealt out to all of the players who leave their cards face down in a pile in front of them. Players turn over their cards at the
same time and if the cards match, the player who calls “SNAP” first wins the cards in both piles. Players then keep turning over their cards until one player ends up with all of them.
Old Maid – Played with a standard deck of cards minus three queens. To start deal the cards to the players until you are out of cards. The dealers hand is kept face down. The remaining players sort out their hands and lay down any pairs that they have.
To start the play the first player takes a card from the dealer and if he/she can make a pair with that card it can be laid down. If not the player keeps the card and the next player starts his/her turn by taking a card from the dealer’s hand, and so on.
NOTE: These basic rules are from how we played these games and may not be the same as others use. They are only meant to help make a rainy day fun. For more information on rules for card games there are various sites on the internet that can be found by typing in “rules for children’s card games” in the search line.
